How French Calculates 70s, 80s, and 90s
Standard French uses a historical base-20 (vigesimal) counting system. Understanding this simple arithmetic makes listening effortless.
70 = Soixante-dix
Calculated as 60 + 10. You count into the teens:
• 72: soixante-douze (60 + 12)
• 75: soixante-quinze (60 + 15)
• 79: soixante-dix-neuf (60 + 19)
80 = Quatre-vingts
Calculated as 4 × 20. Note the plural -s only on 80 exact:
• 82: quatre-vingt-deux
• 85: quatre-vingt-cinq
• 88: quatre-vingt-huit
90 = Quatre-vingt-dix
Calculated as (4 × 20) + 10. Followed by the teens:
• 92: quatre-vingt-douze (4×20 + 12)
• 95: quatre-vingt-quinze (4×20 + 15)
• 99: quatre-vingt-dix-neuf (4×20 + 19)
Cent & Mille
Mille never takes an -s. Years are read as full numbers:
• 1,000: mille · 2,000: deux mille
• 2026: deux mille vingt-six
• 1,000,000: un million
